BREDASDORP

Established on 16 May 1838 on the farm Langefontein. It became a municipality in 1917. It was named after Michiel van Breda (1775-1847), member of the Cape Legislative Assembly from 1838 and the first mayor of Cape Town from 1840

Independent Church
Independent Church now Bredasdorp museum, Independent St – this church was built circa 1864 by the independent congregation after a rift in the local DR congregation. Reunited in 1875. It later became a church hall. With the Rectory next door, it became a museum. Known as the shipwreck museum, it exhibits relics of the shipwrecks on the southern coast.
