Benoni
The name Benoni -after the Hebrew name (son of my sorrow) according to the Biblical book of Geneses - was given to a farm by the surveyor Johann Rissik in 1881. In 1887 gold was discovered in the area. The new mining area was officially declared the township of Benoni in 1906. Benoni became a municipality in 1907.
Chimes Hotel/Chimes Tavern
Chimes Hotel/Chimes Tavern, cnr New Modder & Van Ryn Rd – This was one of the oldest pubs in Gauteng dated 1889. This hotel was owned by Bill Eaton. It got its name from the Bell Syndicate who prospecting for gold found it near where the tavern is today
War Memorial
War Memorial – This monument commemorates the soldiers of Modderfontein Mine, Benoni who died during WW1 – 1914-1918. Currently within the MOTH club grounds, cnr Moth Rd and Rangeview.
Kids Haven
Kids Haven, 34 Cranbourne St – This building was donated to kids Haven in 1999.
Steam Train
Steam Train – in front of the Benoni Museum, 60 Elston Ave, cnr Rothsay. This train was used on the New Kleinfontein Mine. The mine had three trains of which the one on display was named “Benoni”, nicknamed “Ben”. This train was built in England in 1903.
Town Hall
Town Hall, Princess Ave cnr Turvey st – The cornerstone was laid by his Excellency, the Right Honorable Earl of Clarendon, Governor-General of the Union of South Africa on 19 September 1936.
NG Kerk
NG Kerk - this was the original mother church in Benoni. Now the Elevation club . The corner stone was laid by Rev PJ du Plessis – 1921
St Dunstans Cathedral
St Dunstans Cathedral, Woburn Ave. This Anglican Cathedral was built in 1936.
