Bishopscourt

Suburb of Cape Town. Near Kirstenbosch. It was laid out on the farm Boschheuvel, originally owned by Jan van Riebeek in 1658. So named because the residence of the Anglican Bishop of Cape town is situated there.

Anglican Church of the Good Shephard

Anglican Church of the Good Shephard, cnr Rhodes Ave and Kirstenbosch Dr – Initially erected in 1866 for the staff of Bishopscourt nearby. It was re-built by George Wallis in 1880 and again in 1904 by Kendall.  A plaque commemorates circa 1884 in which the people of Protea village worshipped until they were displaced by the Group Areas Act of 1950. The church yard also served as a cemetery.

Protea Village

Protea Village – three stone cottages remained which were part of Protea village (previously part of Boschheuvel0 before the removal of the people. Circa 1890
