Battle of Bronkhorstspruit
Battle of Bronkhorstspruit – R25 about 5 km south of town - The ZAR was annexed by Britain in 1877. The Boers became rebellious. The 94th regiment under Lt-Col Anstruther was instructed to advance to Pretoria from Lydenburg to strengthen the garrison. The restored ZAR Government send Comdt. Frans Joubert to stop this march. The two sides met at the Honde River. Anstruther refused to stop and a battle took place on 20 December 1880. 77 British and two Boers were killed. The one monument marks the battle. On the opposite of the R 25 a monument commemorates the fallen British soldiers. Proclaimed a National monument in 1966.
