Laid out in 1894-1895. Takes its name from its position on the brow of a hill extending from west to east.
Windybrow
161 Pietersen st – designed by William Leck for Theodore Reunert in 1896. The Reunerts sold the house in the 1920’s. In 1986 the house became the Windybrow Theatre.
Friedeskirche
Friedeskirche (Church of Peace) Twist st, between Kapteijn and Petersen St – This German Lutheran Church was designed by Theophile Schaerer and built by Stuart & Co. The ground was given by President Paul Kruger to the German community in 1895. Funds were donated by Kaiser Wilhelm II and empress Victoria-Luise. The cornerstone was laid by Rev M Reylaender on 4 February 1912 and the opening ceremony was held on 22 September 1912. Declared a National Monument on 27 June 1986.
Old Fort
Old Fort – Kotze St – The ZAR decided to build a fort around the prison, which had been built in 1892 after the invasion of the Transvaal by Dr LS Jameson. The fort was to protect the city and the road to Pretoria. Guns could be mounted on the two bastions. It was built between 1896 and 1899 by Commandant (Lt.Col) Adolf Schiel, head of the Prison Services. Designed by Sytze Wierda with the Engineer GH van Winsen. The fort was completed by 12 June 1899. It never played a part in the ABW> Various famous political and other people were incarcerated here. It functioned as a prison until 1987. Declared a National Monument on 27 November 1964.
