KAREEDOUW

It was founded in 1905. The name is of Khoikhoi origin meaning ‘karee pass’ after karee trees. Also, a Khoikhoi tribe who lived in the area, the A’Caree. Local tradition states that the name is derived from karee, a succulent from roots of which yeast is developed to make beer known as karibeer. A karie beer festival is held there.The ‘douw’ is Khoikhoi for ‘pass’ referring to the pass on the road to Tsitsikamma over the mountains.  On the R62 road in the Langkloof.
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church – Built in 1909. It was enlarged in 1929. A cornerstone was laid of the enlargement by Ds CH Stulting on 31 August 1929. An obelisk on the grave of Paul Louis Louw who died on 14 Feb 1933 who was the preacher at this church for seven years, is in a corner at the church. A monument in front of the church commemorates the centenary of the Great Trek in 1938.
DR Church Hall
DR Church Hall – next to the church – The first minister of the church was responsible for the erection of the hall. Dated 1921.
Woodcutter Statue
Woodcutter Statue – it commemorates those who form part of the forestry industry. The sculptor was Phil Minnaar from Pretoria 1n 1986. Inaugurated as part of the Karrie festival on 10 October 1992.

Grave BJ Vorster
Grave BJ Vorster – The grave of Prime Minister of South Africa, Balthazar Johannes Vorster (13/12/1915-10/09/1983). Better known as John Vorster was Prime Minister from 1966 to 1978 and the fourth President from 1978-1979. Buried in the Heroes Acre of the church.
