LADISMITH

On the R62 road. It was laid out in 1852 on the farm Elandsvlei. A municipality was instituted in 1862 and a municipal council installed in 1903. It was named Lady Smith. In honour of Lady Juana Smith, the wife of Sir Harry Smith, Governor of the Cape Colony from 1847 to 1852. To avoid confusion with Ladysmith in Natal, established in 1850, the name was changed in 1879 to Ladismith.
Old Dutch Reformed Church
Old Dutch Reformed Church, 6 South St cnr Church St – This church was inaugurated in 1874 with the first minister Rev D van Velden. The architect was Otto Hager. A new church was built and this one was vacated. It now serves as a museum. The bell tower has been re-erected and completed in July 1998. The grave for Willem van Velden who died on 25 Oct 1904 is amongst a few graves on the left side. There are other graves on the right-hand side. Declared a National Monument on 3 December 1976.

Towerkop
This peak is one of the major peaks in the Swartberg range (2189m). The legend t the peak was a witch who cannot pass over the mountain and used her wand to split the peak in two to enable to pass through the middle.
