MEIRINGSPOORT

Mountain pass through the Swartberg range between De Rust and Klaarstroom. Named after Petrus Johannes Meiring, owner of the farm De Rust. The road was built by AG de Smidt, brother in Law of Thomas Bain. It was completed in 1857 and opened on 3 March 1858. It follows the flow of the Groot River, the link between the Little Karoo and the Great Karoo.

Herrieklip - CJ Langenhoven (1873-1932), Afrikaans writer and author od the South African Anthem (die Stem) chiselled the name of the elephant “HERRIE” from his book “Sonde met die Bure” in July 1929. He refers to it in jest as a monument to himself. In 1973 the site was declared a National Monument to commemorate the centenary of Langenhoven’s birth.
