It was established in 1900 and administered by a village management board from 1945. Named after Malta von Burgsdorff, wife of the commander of the garrison at Gibeon. The name is of German origin meaning ‘Malta height”.

• Duwisib Castle, 72 km from Maltahohe – Built by Baron von Wolf for his American wife, Jayta. Completed in 1909. Most of the construction materials, furniture and fittings were shipped from Germany, offloaded in Luderitz and transported to the site by ox wagon.
