t was established on the farm Sterkloop in 1884 and attained municipal status in September 1903. Names after Commandant-General Piet Joubert (1831-1900), Acting State President. In 2002 the name was changed to Polokwane, Northern Sotho for “place of safety’.
Concentration camp cemetery
Concentration camp cemetery, 2 Kobalt St Nirvana – A monument was erected in 1908 commemorating the 650 women and children who died in the concentration camp between May 1901 and February 1902.
Irish House
Irish House – Thabo Mbeki St – previously known as Rheingold Building. A prefabricated building moved to the city by a German immigrant August Julius Herman Moschke. The original building burnt down in 1906 and rebuilt in 1910. It was later purchased by James Albert Jones, an Irishman. He named the building Irish House. The building fell into disrepair and was restored by the City of Polokwane in 1984 converting it to a museum. Declared a national Monument on 7 March 1986.Photo Descripsion

National Bank building, Landdros Mare St – now First National Bank. Built circa 1921. Declared a Provincial Heritage site.
Town hall
Town hall – this was the original DR church, Civic centre complex, landdros Mare st – built circa 1890 – now the Hugh Exton Photographic Museum.

Dutch Reformed Church – cnr Grobler St and Biccard St- the cornerstone was laid by Rev BH Swart on 31 March 1917.

Fort Louis Campbell, Marabastad
Fort Louis Campbell, Marabastad – R 519 near Kuschke Agricultural School – Situated on the farm Sand River – The English fort or earthworks, oner of seven forts in the Transvaal during the First War of Independence (1880-81). A Boer commando under Barend J Vorster besieged the fort for 105 days. British losses were 5 killed and one wounded and one Boer killed. In 1942 a monument for the British was erected. Proclaimed a National Monument on 27 January 1938.
Eersteling
Eersteling – here the first gold ore in Transvaal was crushed. Pieter Jacob Marais found traces of gold in the vicinity of Marabastad in 1853. Edward Button in partnership with William Pigg, discovered gold at Eersteling on 31 August 1871. All that remains of the of their installations was the chimney, built circa 1872. Declared a National Monument on 29 June 1938.
