Rooihuiskraal Battlefield
Rooihuiskraal Battlefield – Cnr Rooihuiskraal Rd and Lenchen Rd – The battle took place on 12 February 1881 during the First War of Independence (1880-1881). During the war Pretoria was besieged by the Boer forces for a period of 100 days. The attack was led by Lt-Col Gildea with a force of 600 men at 02h00 but the Boers (about 150) were awake. Gildea and 16 others were wounded. One was killed and seven died of their wounds. No casualties on the Boer side. This was the last attempt of the besieged. The site was declared a National Monument on 13 February 1981.
