SWELLENDAM

It develops around the drostdy which was established in 1747. It attained municipal status in 1904. Named in October 1747 after the Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel (1700-1760) and his wife, Helena ten Damme.
Dutch Reformed Church
Dutch Reformed Church, 11 Voortrek St – It replaced a previous church. It was built by FW and F Hesse in 1910. The cornerstone was laid on 25 November 1910. Inaugurated on 10 june 1911 by Prof CFJ Muller. Declared a National Monument on 15 October 1982.
Drostdy, Swellengrebel St
Drostdy, Swellengrebel St – The building started in 1746. It was enlarged in 1812 by Landdrost PS Buissine and was designed by JH Voorman. It was opened as a museum on 20 October 1943. The area was declared a Republic in 1795 until the British occupation.
Coronation Monument
Coronation Monument, Voortrek St – It commemorates the Coronation of King George V (3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) of England on 22 June 1911. He succeeded his father King Edward VII to the throne on 6 May 1910.
Auld House
Auld House, 4 Voortrek St – It was the home of the Barry family. The original section was built by JW Paulsen in 1802. It was bought by Joseph Barry in 1826. The Barry dominated all trade in the Overberg region.  It was twice enlarged, in 1835 and 1853. Declared a National Monument on 21 October 1966.
Christ Church
Christ Church – This Anglican church replaced a church designed by Sophy Gray in 1852. It was demolished and replaced by this church built on the foundations of the predecessor’s foundations.  This stone church was designed by Baker and Kendall in 1911.
Bethel HallChrist Church
• Bethel Hall, 165 Voortrek St cnr Bethel St – The cornerstone was laid by Rev SH Rossouw on 4 March 1935. Used as a church hall.
Oefening Huis
Oefening Huis / Meeting House – Voortrek st – built in 1838 for the purpose of holding religious services and prayer meetings and education of the heathens to convert them to Christianity. It thus played an important part in the education and religious life of the town. Named Oefeningshuis for used to do ‘godsdiensoefining’. Declared a National Monument on 2 December 1955.
St Luke’s Anglican ChurchChrist Church
St Luke’s Anglican Church, Voortrek St – This Mission church was designed by Sophy Gray, wife of Bishop Gray of Cape Town in 1869. It was completed in 1874 after the both Grays’ deaths. It was consecrated by Bishop West Jones on 11 March 1875.  Currently used by the Old Apostolic Church of Africa. Declared a National Monument on 7 March 1986.
Interdenominational ChurchChrist Church
Interdenominational Church, 99 Voortrek St – old DR Mission Church dated 1904.
18 Swellengrebel St 
 18 Swellengrebel St – The house stands on land granted to Rev H von Manger in 1802. He sold it to the DR church. The double-storeyed house dates from 1853. It now houses the offices of the Drostdy museum. Declared a National Monument on 21 April 1972.
JVDS Rothman House, 268 Voortrek St
JVDS Rothman House, 268 Voortrek St – Erected by Johannes Rothman, master wagoner and blacksmith. Dated 1834. It is suspected that the letters JVDS refer to ‘Jaar Van Die Slaven’ and the year that the slaves were freed. Declared a National Monument on 23 September 1988.
