THE WATERFRONT

The old Alfred and Victoria basins was constructed in 1870 and 1905 respectively. Prince Alfred launched the first phase which tipped the first stones on17 September 1860. The Alfred basin was officially opened in 1870.  The Victoria basin was opened in 1905. The names derived from Queen Victoria and her second son Alfred of England. The current waterfront was developed in the 1990’s
Clock Tower
Clock Tower – It stood at was the the entrance of the Alfred basin. Originally called the Dock Clock and Time Guage Tower. It was built in 1882. It served as the first Port Captain’s office. Beneath the tower is a shaft linked to the sea which enabled the tide guage mechanism to indicate the exact state of the tide to passing vessels. Declared a National Monument on 4 August 1978.
Time-ball tower
Time-ball tower, off Portswood Rd – the time ball acted as a time signalfor the harbour area. It was built in 1894 and heightened in 1903. It served as a repeater station between the Royal Observatory and Signal Hill where a gun is fired at noon.Photo Descripsion
